So my big project for the summer is to learn about bees and pollination. I received a scholarship from the Garden Club of America to study bees. Earlier in May and June I took a class with Marla Spivak. an entomologist at the UM.
I learned how to manage a hive, extract honey, and manage diseases.
Even though I got a late start to the season, I got a bee package in the mail a week ago. the bees were mostly dead, and were starting to smell because of decomposing. I hived the package, and gave them some sugar water to discover that the queen was dead too.
So I bought a new queen, and we will see how it turns out this Tuesday, when I receive the queen! Till then, lets hope the ladies (since all worker bees are women) can hang in there!
